    FAQs

I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, I’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

The difference is between someone who can do something and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve all issues.I like to explore alternative interventions prior to seeking out medications, however, sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.

    How long will it take?

Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success.

How Can Christian Counseling Help Me?

Many of us get stuck in the bad habit of feeling ashamed of our mental health struggles. This shame, combined with the fear of judgment, often prevents us from pursuing the mental health help that we need to move forward in the right direction. It’s important that we learn it is okay to ask for help and, more importantly, to reach out for that help. Believe it or not, asking for help shows great strength as well as faith in God.

Do I have to believe in God or be a Christian to seek help with you?

No, I work with all individuals and believe in meeting people where they are. It is not a prerequisite to be a Christian, but I am always open to discussing if you would like to know more about my faith.

    What is my Therapeutic technique?

Psychotherapy: Through our sessions, we work to help you gain insight, reduce stress and anxiety, set goals, clarify dreams, highlight strengths, plus develop and deepen coping skills. By providing a safe space, we work together to deepen self-understanding and self-compassion while taking steps to move you forward.
Integrative or holistic therapy: Rather than using a “one size fits all” approach, I tend to blend elements from different approaches and tailor their treatment according to each client’s needs. I utilize the following approaches:
Cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy emphasizes what people think rather than what they do.
Humanistic therapy. This approach emphasizes people’s capacity to make rational choices and develop to their maximum potential. Concern and respect for others are also important themes.
Client-centered therapy rejects the idea of therapists as authorities on their clients’ inner experiences. Instead, therapists help clients change by emphasizing their concern, care and interest.

    What is your fee?

My fee is $100 per 50-minute session.

Do you offer a Sliding Fee Scale?

I do not currently offer a Sliding Fee Scale. My fees are a flat rate of $100 per 50-minute session. I do, however, offer discounts throughout the year. Feel free to contact me to learn how you may be eligible for a 20% off discount.

    How long are sessions?

    Our sessions are 50 minutes.

What payment methods do you accept?

I accept all major credit and debit cards. Payment is due at the end of each session.

    Do you accept insurance?

I am currently In-Network with BCBS, Cigna/Evernorth and United Health Care.

What should I ask my insurance company?

My services may be reimbursable through your plan’s out-of-network mental health benefits. Prior to beginning treatment, I encourage you to verify your coverage by asking: Does my plan include coverage for out-of-network mental health services? How much does my plan cover for an out-of-network provider? What is my deductible for out-of-network services and has it been met? Do I have a session limit? What form(s) do I need for submitting my invoice(s) to receive my out-of-network benefits? Is teletherapy covered?

    How often do we meet?

For continuity, I prefer to meet with clients once a week. Together we will coordinate a schedule that works best with your preferences, finances, and issues.

Is everything I tell you confidential?

Everything you tell me is confidential with a few exceptions: If I feel that you are an immediate danger to yourself or others, I can break confidentiality to keep you/others safe. If I hear about the abuse (or suspected abuse) of anyone under the age of 18, an elderly person, or someone with a disability, I am mandated to report it. If confidential information is subpoenaed in a court of law, I must comply with the subpoena and this would not happen without your prior knowledge.

If I don’t live in the Austin area, can we still work together?

Yes, I am Licensed for the entire state of Texas.

What if I need to cancel an appointment?

Although issues such as family and work emergencies, childcare issues, or illness may arise that make it challenging to keep your appointment, I do have a firm 24-hour cancellation policy. Since the appointment time has been set aside just for you, there will be a full charge of $50 for any cancellations within 24 hours.
